Ever since the early years of the twentieth century, artists around the world have been grappling with the question of how we define 'art'. Breaking away from the countless long-held traditions which had previously dictated what could (and what could not) be viewed as fine art, many creators over recent decades have experimented with form and media, tearing down the boundaries in their forays into the avant-garde.
Featuring masterpieces from the collection of Tate Modern, this talk will include works by modern masters such as Picasso, Matisse, and Rothko as well as contemporary pieces by living artists. From rethinking the portrait to questioning the role of the artist, from ideas of the readymade to turning apparently worthless junk into beautiful, valuable sculpture, a virtual visit to Tate Modern will allow us to more fully understand what we mean by 'avant-garde' and debate just what it is we mean by 'art'.
Led by art historian and art expert Alan Montgomery, this interactive discussion will cover a few masterpieces of the Tate collection in depth. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a more thorough understanding of the artists and their works.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

An Outstanding Lecture!

Alan answered “What is art?” by discussing in-depth some of Tate Modern’s most outstanding holdings. His knowledge and enthusiasm made one of Context’s most brilliant Conversations.

For other time zones (I'm in California), the earlier times don't work so I need to look for ones starting at 2 or 5 etc. Also, a list cataloguing ones at each time slot would be helpful, but I can look them up too.
