Often mocked as an oxymoron, “military intelligence” proved crucial to Allied victories in the deserts and cities of North Africa and the Greater Middle East in both World War I and II.
This revealing presentation investigates what went on behind closed doors in a Cairo hotel and in desert camps from Libya to the Arabian Peninsula through some of the Twentieth Century’s most colorful personalities, including T.E. Lawrence, the men of the Long Range Desert Group, and their successors, David Stirling’s SAS.
Led by an expert on the history of the middle east, Eamonn Gearon, this interactive seminar will explore Allied forces in the middle east during both World Wars. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the main events and principal players in the region during this time period.
This conversation is part of a three-part series with Eamonn Gearon. Each session is designed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of the series.
- War, Peace, and Travel Writing: European Exploration in Egypt and the Sudan (1798 – 1898) with Eamonn Gearon

The author of three lecture series on Middle Eastern history and culture for The Great Courses, Eamonn also designed and is responsible for delivering Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area studies training for both the British and American governments: the FCDO & US Department of State.
