Uzbekistan is the most visited country in Central Asia. It attracts travelers with its well-preserved cities and countless historical monuments. It is home to the important Silk Road trading centers Samarkand and Bukhara, where UNESCO recognizes whole city blocks as world treasures. Uzbekistan is also the birthplace of the great Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur, also known as Tamerlane, whose impact rivals that of Genghis Khan. Timur's thirst for immortality resulted in the creation of the grandiose and ornate buildings that continue to impress visitors even today.

Led by an expert on the post-Soviet space, Nina Wieda, this course illuminates Uzbekistan's rich history and culture. Designed to inspire curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased fascination for Uzbekistan and an understanding of its unique cultural and political landscape.

Nina Wieda is a native of the Caucasus living in Chicago, USA. She holds a Ph.D. in Slavic from Northwestern University and an MA in Nationalism Studies from Central European University. I will probably never get to Uzbekistan. I was curious about the country. Dr. Wieda gave history and a good view of the country.

Great Intro to Uzbekistan

Dr. Wieda's knowledge is amazing - she really brought the topic alive! The photos are beautiful. In fact, I was so inspired afterwards, that I went to the library and checked a book on Tamerlane to learn more about his and his empire. This information will definitely make my trip to Uzbekistan in October so much better!

Knowledge and spirit

Comprehensive, lively lecture with stunning photos. Historical context explained clearly.

Unsatisfactory

Lots of history, but too long spent on titles, and not long enough on illustrations. It was hard to enjoy the beauty of the architecture when the slides changed so quickly, while the titles lasted much too long.
