Explore Stockholm, the largest city in Nordic Europe. Together we will get to know its long history and understand Swedish cultural heritage. From the Vikings to modern urban planning, we will get a taste for the rich variety of sites and scenes in Sweden’s capital.

We will start in the Old Town and study the medieval settlement constructed on an island in Lake Mälaren, once a busy trading site as far back as the twelfth century. We will relate this site to its Viking past and also to Sweden’s role after the industrial revolution when Stockholm became accessible to the rest of Europe. The “Swedish Model” started to take shape in this era and was an example of social, cultural, and political life for two centuries.

North of the historic center of town, we will see fine examples of Art Nouveau architecture from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Once headed by Ingemar Bergman, the Royal Dramatic Theatre is a local landmark in this area of Stockholm. Next, we will visit the once working-class neighborhood of Södermalm, to the south, now a gentrified suburb known by readers of the Millenium Trilogy by Stieg Larssen. We will also discuss Vällingby, a suburb to the west, and how it became a model for new suburban life in Europe. Built in the nineteen fifties, it was a groundbreaking model for suburban planning which attracted curious visitors from near and far.

We will conclude with a look at Sweden’s Viking roots at the Vasa Museum to study a giant four-hundred-year-old warship, long forgotten until it was rediscovered in the twentieth century and restored.

Led by an expert on Stockholm, Jonas Sundberg, this interactive seminar will introduce participants to historic and modern Stockholm. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the richness of cultural life in the largest city in Sweden.

Jonas Sundberg is a teacher of history and has guided many Context tours in the Old Town of Stockholm. He also has in-depth knowledge of present day Stockholm and its cultural sites.

Enjoyable overview of the city

This conversation gave me an overview that felt like a walk around a previously unknown city that felt much more familiar by the end. The presenter’s knowledge of his home base really came through and his suggestions were helpful, both in the main talk and in his Q & A responses. The discussion of early Stockholm and how it came to be was fascinating — history is always welcome.
