St. Peter’s Basilica is the most important of the four major basilicas in Rome and is considered the most important Catholic Church on Earth. This talk aims to explore this treasure chest of marvelous artworks and faith, starting from the very beginning. We will travel back to the early 4th Century BC, when Emperor Constantine promoted the building of a large basilica above the simple tomb of the Apostle Peter, the man most often regarded as the first Pope.

This basilica would become the ultimate destination for pilgrims for centuries. At the dawn of the Renaissance, the Popes promoted its rebuilding, with the works lasting over one-hundred and twenty years, under twenty different popes and with the best architects of the time involved, such as Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo to name just a few…

The basilica was further embellished during the 17th Century with glorious artworks by Gian Lorenzo Bernini who is also responsible for the majestic square that, every day, welcomes pilgrims and visitors with its monumental embrace. Led by an expert on History and Conservation of the Artistic Heritage, Livia Galante, this Conversation will focus on the Basilica of St. Peter's, the Hearth of the Vatican City. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased comprehension of the architecture and the art of this extraordinary church, its dome and its square.

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Roma Tre. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. As a native Roman, Livia is very enthusiastic about sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

An In-depth Analysis of St Peter's Basilica

One of the best seminars presented by Livia Galante (and I have learned from many, many of them over the past 2 years). She led listeners through the long history of how this magnificent structure and its surroundings came to be. The leaders in its construction, the special artistic wonders within its walls, the artists who completed the works -- all in this compact seminar. So much information, some I knew but some were new! I need to re-watch to ensure that I retain it all! Thanks!
