The Papal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, the second largest basilica after St. Peter’s and truly St. Peter's spiritual and artistic twin. According to legend, the church was built by Emperor Constantine on the site where the Apostle Paul was buried. Enlarged at the end of the Fourth Century, it was completed in the year 395 AD by Emperor Honorius.

At this picturesque basilica, visitors will find monolithic granite columns, mosaic portraits of the Popes from Peter to Francis, and a magnificent ciborium (a canopy) designed by Arnolfo di Cambio (1285) alongside the beautiful Twelfth Century Pascal Candelabrum. Although ravaged by a fire and rebuilt in 1825, the Candelabrum miraculously survived and is an esteemed relic. In fact, numerous architectural fragments from the ancient basilica and archaeological finds from the nearby Ostian burial ground are preserved within the cloister, making it one of the best-preserved wonders of Thirteenth Century Rome.

Led by an expert on Ancient Roman Topography, Livia Galante, this Course will focus on the Four Patriarchal Basilicas of Rome. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding that each of the Papal Basilicas has its own story, greatly related to its period of history, its commissioner, and the Biblical elements portrayed throughout it.

Livia obtained a degree in Archaeology at the Sapienza University of Rome and has a Master's degree in the History and Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the University of Roma Tre. Her main field of interest is ancient Roman topography and early Christian architecture; however, she is an accomplished scholar whose teaching ability extends to the Renaissance and Baroque Rome. As a native Roman, Livia is very enthusiastic about sharing the deep love and knowledge she has for her hometown with clients.

Livia's talks are always fascinating

Livia's talks are always well-organized, with fantastic visuals, and delivered with great passion. We watch as many of them as we can. This one was especially interesting because of the long history of the church. Livia convinced us we should visit while we're in Rome.
