The oldest record of Saint Patrick's existence and life is written in an 8th century manuscript known as The Book of Armagh, making it one of the oldest and finest of the Irish manuscripts held at the Long Room Library at Trinity College Dublin. For this seasonal seminar we will take a deep dive into the early manuscripts whilst expanding our view to incorporate some of the highlights of this 18th century library. The Long Room Library is home to nearly 350,000 printed books, 600 medieval manuscripts and over 600 significant objects. The Book of Armagh contains two records of the life of St Patrick. It is one of seven highly regarded manuscripts from the 8th century held within the library of which The Book of Kells is just one. We will complete our conversation on the huge conservation project which is underway at the library and the extensive decanting process to lift, conserve, and store all its literary treasures.
Led by an expert on Irish history, Jennifer Carbery, this interactive seminar will engage participants in understanding the complexities surrounding manuscripts, libraries, conservation and the wealth of knowledge garnered from these exquisite treasures
