Who really was Saint Patrick? Join a local Irish expert as we talk about who he was: a man, a myth, a legend, or even a Roman. Enjoy an informative way to celebrate and learn about the iconic day of St. Patrick.
We will begin by discussing how we know what we know about St. Patrick, what manuscripts contain his own words, and the stories which reveal aspects of his life. How did a cult surrounding him develop in the twelfth century to elevate him as the most important saint? We’ll try and answer this intriguing question before we delve into learning about how we celebrate, commemorate and identify with St. Patrick and being Irish through the 17th March.
We’ll also explore a short history of the tradition of St. Patrick's Day celebrations and parades that began in the US and learn how it was only later established itself as a festival or parade day in Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day has become an undeniable way of bringing Irish emigrants together for the last few centuries.
Led by an expert on Ireland, Jennifer Carbery, this interactive seminar will inform, enlighten and celebrate St. Patrick and his connections with the Irish around the world. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased awareness of how we know what we know about Saints and scholars and how those for centuries after followed and worshipped his life.
