Our spotlight on Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) examines the life and legacy of one of the most innovative and original artists of the nineteenth century. Through a comprehensive but accessible introduction to the oeuvre of the artist, we will explore Gauguin’s role and contribution to modern art history. While analyzing autobiographical information to better grasp the inspiration sources of this complex artist, we will proceed to an in-depth analysis of his most iconic works.

Amateur painter, stockbroker, and father of five, taken by Impressionism, Gauguin decided to throw it all away to become an artist and live solely for art. Disgusted by the satiety and complacence of European civilization, Gauguin set off on his quest for a paradise lost, going to Brittany in Pont-Aven, then to Panama and Martinique, and finally to Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands. In this seminar, we will explore his artistic experiments that influenced many avant-garde developments in the early twentieth century as well as his contribution to synthetism and symbolism and the way he paved the way for primitivism in western art. We will also analyze his influence on major artists of the time such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and published author, Dr. Timea Andrea Lelik, this interactive seminar will explore the contribution of this great artist to the history of art. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation and novel interpretations of the most iconic works by Paul Gauguin and how these have influenced the course of art.

This seminar has been designed as part of an extended series of Spotlight Conversations featuring Artists throughout history. To learn more, please click here.

I loved this lecture. I learned so much more from Dr. Lelik than I had ever heard before. She carefully described the nuanced life of Gauguin and helped dispel some of the worst parts of his reputation as a person, while showing the beauty and meaning behind his paintings. It was 90 minutes well spent.

Another outstanding talk. This series is proving to be one of the best art history courses I have ever taken -- and I've studied a lot. The combination of the artist's life with his works is fascinating.

I've now attended four online seminars with Dr. Lelik and all have been superb in every aspect. They are highly informative, interesting, comprehensive and, frankly, entertaining. That she is a lovely lady with a relaxed presentational style only adds to the mix.
