Donatello (1386-1466 AD), one of the most important sculptors of all times, was one of the fathers of the Florentine Renaissance. Join our conversation to learn about Donatello’s life and career, his master skills in different techniques and with different kinds of material, and his long-lasting influence on generations of sculptors and painters. We will also set the stage for a future in-person visit to his recently opened, critically-acclaimed retrospective exhibition which opens in Florence in 2022.

From his beginnings with Lorenzo Ghiberti to the journeys to Rome with Brunelleschi, the conversation covers the evolution of his style and artistic interest and Donatello’s relation to other artists to introduce you to his innovative style through his most famous works. The venues considered will include the Baptistry and the Cathedral of Florence, the church of Orsanmichele, the church of San Lorenzo, Palazzo Medici, and the Bargello Museum.

Led by Florentine art historian Alessandra Becucci, this conversation will introduce you to one of the leading figures of the Italian Renaissance and his influence on artists like Michelangelo through the artworks he left in Florence, Siena, Prato, and Padua.

Born and raised in Florence, Alessandra has a degree in art history from the University of Florence with a specialization in seventeenth-century painting. She obtained an MRes from the European University Institute in Florence, where she defended her Ph.D in history, focusing on the patronage of Tuscan nobility in Europe during the seventeenth century. She has been teaching art history and Italian for several years in various schools and institutions in Florence.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Excellent as always

She is a wonderful presenter; very knowledgeable and clear. I learned so much and will be attending future presentations.

Knowledgeable but disappointing

The presentation was disappointing despite the obvious knowledge of Alessandra. The screen was usually occupied by a large blank white box with just few words while the Donatello illustrations were very small. Almost every time she said “can you see this?”, I could not see it. I don’t know why there were not some close-up photos of the details about which she was spoke at length.
