Join a local expert, broadcasting live from the coastline of Croatia, as they allow participants to see firsthand the sites and sounds through this virtual tour. In 1979 Diocletian's Palace was proclaimed to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses the second oldest Cathedral in the world, an outstanding complex of substructures, Roman Temples, and an impressive medieval settlement within its walls. The video-camera-led virtual tour will weave and wind its way through the vibrant streets of Split, Croatia –– creating opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and an immersive visual experience.

This conversation will serve as an introduction to the city with a focus on the splendid Diocletian’s Palace. Diocletian was one of the longest-reigning Emperors and the first in Roman history to abdicate. He retired to his province of Dalmatia in his imperial palace from which the city of Split was born. Together we will walk these streets and discuss the historical context of this idyllic city.

In 284 AD, Dalmatian Diocles’s military skills brought him to the imperial throne. Under his Tetrarchy system, he ruled successfully for twenty years then abdicated and retired to his imperial palace in the province of Dalmatia. Many of those out-buildings still stand. Located next to his palace were sulfur springs which assisted him in his recovery and are still actively used today.

Led by an expert in local history, Ante Batarelo, this online virtual tour will present Diocletian's Imperial Palace and Split. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of antiquity and the Mediterranean spirit of Split.

Ante Batarelo was born & raised in Sydney, Australia to Croatian parents. He has a degree from Zagreb University and for the last 30 years has been living in Croatia and happily married with 5 children. He's done an array of jobs from university lecturing, translation, and tour guiding. His other loves are history, the outdoors, and hiking.
