Join a local Salzburg expert for an in-depth examination of the 1965 movie the Sound of Music, the Von Trapp family and the history behind this celebrated film.
Salzburg is the Sound of Music City. But why is it still so famous for the movie? As the recipient of five Oscars, the movie is still one of the most successful productions in cinematic history. It all started with a true family story from Salzburg. But, does the movie reflect what was really going on in Austria?
This conversation will look at the true story of the Von Trapp family, why they left Salzburg and will discuss the making of the 1965 movie. We will virtually visit a number of sites that appear in this Oscar-winning film, but will also take some time to dig behind the history of the movie through the lens of a local. As we discuss Mirabell Gardens or Mondsee and the lakes, we’ll address a variety of topics, from the Hapsburg Empire to the political backdrop of WW2 and the role of the Nazis and the Anschluss. We’ll also discuss the reasons why this film took off in certain parts of the world and not others (unbeknown to many, the majority of Austrians have never seen the film). This seminar focuses on the real Von Trapp family as a snapshot into the history of this period, examining the impact of the movie for a little city like Salzburg. It offers a wonderful snapshot into both the charming city of Salzburg and the beautiful Austrian countryside.
Led by local Salzburg Guide Michaela, this interactive discussion will give you a good insight into the Sound of Music movie and the true story behind the Hollywood tale. After this discussion you will have a better understanding how the film has impacted the tourism in Salzburg and may or may not influence the city’s inhabitants today. Designed for curious and culture loving participants and hoping to inspire future Austrian travel.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
