Slovenia is a tiny country in the heart of Europe, full of surprises, natural beauty, and cultural allure.  Join a local expert to explore this charming country that sits at the intersection of Germany, Hungary, Italy, and the Balkans. With strong influences on all sides, Slovenia makes its own rich and diverse cultural path forward.

This seminar will start with some important basic insights and will continue through the use of photographs, stories, legends, video inserts from the locations, and some local music to give a broader and also deeper understanding of this fascinating, yet the tiny country of Central-South Europe. We will discuss the past and the present and how they intersect in a unique Slovenian culture. We will also explore white limestone mountains, secret underground worlds, rolling hills with vineyards and ancient villages, a charming Adriatic coastline with Venetian towns, an abundance of forests, rivers, and lakes, and Ljubljana, one of the smallest (and most charming) capitals of Europe. We will come to understand the reality of Slovenia, its complete singularity among other Slavic nations, and its differences from other countries in the region. But above all, we will leave the seminar inspired by its history and its surprising beauty.

Led by an art historian and expert on Slovenian culture, Alja Mravljak, this interactive seminar will present the beautiful and charming country of Slovenia. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Slovenia past and present.

Alja Mravljak is a born Slovenian, raised in its capital city of Ljubljana. During her studies at the Art History and Sociology departments of the University of Ljubljana, she worked in The Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana and in a private gallery. After completing her studies, she fell in love with tourist guiding. For her, it meant getting to study different cultures and countries of the world and sharing her knowledge and love with her guests on different tours around China, Cuba, Morocco, Turkey, Ireland, Scotland, and above all, Slovenia. Alja is a passionate educator and a storyteller and has been working as a professional tour guide for the last 19 years, always bringing more engaging encounters with the topic via the use of different costumes, stories, and legends, a poem or two, local music, or simply with sharing her vast knowledge of the world and its cultures. She adores art and beauty and passes that love on via her talks.
