Siberia and Europe are roughly the same sizes, but the population of Siberia is only 4% of the size of Europe’s population. Siberia is home to the Taiga Forest–a largely unexplored coniferous forest that absorbs more CO2 from the atmosphere than the Amazon rainforests–and where the temperature falls down to -40°F.

It is also home to the planet’s largest freshwater lake, Baikal, which contains 23% of the world’s freshwater. In-between large industrial cities constructed during the Soviet period, Siberia is populated by native tribes that maintain their nomadic lifestyle in extremely inhospitable climate conditions.

Led by an expert on Russian history, Dr. Nina Wieda, this Conversation will introduce curious travelers to the mysterious world of Siberia and suggest possible itineraries for those who want to experience it first-hand. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a better understanding of Siberia and a desire to see it for themselves.

Terrific as always!

This was a very interesting conversation as I knew very little about this part of the world or the treasures that it holds. Dr. Wieda Focuses on the history, the culture, food and other aspects that leave one with a real appreciation for the area and things to see and do there.

Excellent, Enthusiastic and Exotic!

I have participated in several of Dr. Nina Wieda’s presentations, and they have all been excellent. She is very knowledgeable about the subject matter, friendly and enthusiastic, and invests a lot of thought and planning in her presentations. She fully appreciates and actively responds to participants’ questions and ideas. This program about Siberia was a cut above, in part because of the exotic and isolated regions it covered. She included both extensive natural sites and communities, often ethnic minorities, and as always, included discussion and illustration of local people, their lives, foods, etc. Nina actually made me want to visit Siberia, maybe in my next life!

Siberia Continues to Fascinate

I've listened to lectures on Siberia before, but this one contained a lot of info that was new to me. It turns out not everything of interest is along the railway. A very stimulating and enjoyable lecture.
