The Anglo-Irish Antarctic explorer, Ernest Shackleton, was one of the main protagonists in the twentieth century’s Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, having led three of his own expeditions to the White Continent. However, it was his failed attempt to traverse Antarctica in 1914 which launched him to international fame, when his ship, Endurance, became trapped in sea ice before the expedition had even begun.

Their mission now became one of survival, and Shackleton needed all of his experience and leadership skills to keep his crew alive during the Antarctic winter while they decided on a plan to get them back to civilization. Rescue was out of the question, leading to one of the bravest journeys imaginable towards salvation.

Led by an expert on maritime history, James Grant-Peterkin, this Conversation will retell one of the greatest stories of human resilience to have occurred on the ice. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of Ernest Shackleton and the realities of Antarctic exploration.

James Grant-Peterkin is a graduate of Cambridge University and is the British Honorary Consul on Easter Island. He has been studying Polynesian culture, linguistics, and archaeology for over 20 years, most of those while living on Easter Island itself, and is author of the guidebook “A Companion to Easter Island”. He has lectured extensively on Eastern Polynesia, both on cruise ships and at educational institutions worldwide.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Antarctic exploration

This was a fantastic seminar about a dramatic history, delivered with passion. The photographs taken 100 years ago were also fascinating. I got definetly inspired to read more about Shackleton.
