Dr. Alan is a marvelous teacher and his seminars are always fascinating. I love the approach to this 10 week course on Scottish history of taking an important historic artifact of the period he is describing and using it as the key to open a door on that moment in time. It really gives you a touchstone to remember the historic events that where going on when and where that artifact originated. His knowledge and passion for his subject is contagious!
This is such an interesting series. I have taken a number with Dr. Montgomery and he is always interesting, well informed and very broad in the number of things he covers in terms of history, quirky stories, aesthetics, and other details. This particular series is wonderful in that he focuses on various objects to tell the history and folklore and other interesting details. An absolute wonderful time and experience.
Dr. Montgomery does a fantastic job combining historical artifacts with the historical and cultural narrative of Scotland. He also does a great job handling the technology of virtual learning. This class is just superb.

Dr. M. chose the artifacts thoughtfully to illuminate different eras and historical events, from pre-history through the turn of the 20th century. The pictures and videos were excellent, and covered, among other areas, art, archeology, history, literature and human interactions. He used the artifacts as a starting point to discuss the relevant era. There was always time for questions, and if he didn't know the answer, he would come back the next week with an answer. For me, it was "appointment zoom."
