The castle is a key feature of the romantic ideal of the Scottish landscape: a signature and meaningful communicator of Scotland’s architectural and cultural heritage. These range from medieval ruins at lochsides or on imposing cliff edges, Victorian fantasies of castellated structures, and the two imposing royal castles at the center of many a tourist’s encounters with Scottish castellated history, Edinburgh and Stirling Castles.

Led by an expert on architectural and art history, Alexander Collins, this seminar will discuss the role of castles and forts from the earliest eras of Scotland's history to the country's bloody wars of independence with England to the emergence of Scotland as a renaissance country. We will better understand the history of fortification, of aristocratic living, of the political formation of both Scotland and the United Kingdom, and the changing nature of power through history. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an expanded understanding of not only castles but the dark corners and many corners of Scottish history.

Alex Collins is a PhDl student in the History of Art at the University of Edinburgh, where he researches medieval art and architecture.. He studied his MA in Art History and English at the University of St Andrews in 2009, before working in heritage and local government. At the University of Edinburgh, Alex teaches art and architectural history.

Fun, educational and engaging!

Alexander Collins was superb. He provided in-depth detailed information while at the same time keeping us engaged. It was clear he knows the subject matter really well and was enthusiastic in sharing his knowledge. I would highly recommend this seminar to anyone remotely interested in the subject. So fun!

Disappointed

I had thought that hs presentation would be for an hour with time later for questions. At 75 minutes when I needd to leave he was just getting to the interesting part of his presentation. He had too much detail which was difficult to understand and his illustrations were confusing. I thought there would be time for questions. This was my first conversation so I was disappointed. I will try another.
