Thessaloniki, the "Salonica Madre de Israel" of the Greek Jews, is a city that is also a unique open-air museum. Bearing the name of an ancient princess, Thessaloniki reflects her cosmopolitan character with great Byzantine, Jewish and Ottoman treasures. In this seminar, we will explore the living Jewish legacy and contemporary life through the city's monuments, artifacts, and hidden secrets!

Thessaloniki is a destination in its own right and one that has always provided a welcoming environment for people of different backgrounds and perspectives, enabling new ideas and reinforcing cultural diversities. The Jewish presence in Thessaloniki dates back twenty-one centuries. Jews from the Mediterranean and central Europe have been arriving and settling here throughout history, starting with ancient Jews from Alexandria, the ancestors of Romaniote Greek Jews, then Ashkenazim Jews from Hungary and Germany, followed by Jews from Provence, Italy, and Sicily. Last but not least, 20,000 Sephardim Jews arrived after having been expelled from Spain. The cultured Ladino-speaking Sephardim carried a distinctive Jewish diasporic identity with them and contributed to the wealth and prosperity of the city. One may say that the devastating fire of 1917 and the suffering of Thessaloniki's Jews during the Holocaust left little to remind us of this glorious past, but as we explore the evidence left behind, either in situ or in the collections of the Jewish Museum and synagogues of the city, we will see that this legacy is very much alive!

Led by Kapi Panou, an expert on Jewish heritage, this interactive seminar is an exploration of Salonica’s Jewish legacy. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the ancient history of Thessaloniki
