We all know that Italy and Northern Europe are renowned for their art, and their artists are revered throughout history and across the globe, but what about Spain? With a rich history, a dynamic culture, and a colorfully diverse populace, where is the appreciation and roaring applause for Spanish art?

In this absorbing and original seminar, Spanish art gains its rightful spot at centre stage as art historian Sabry Amroussi takes you on the road to reveal the fabulous art treasures of this picturesque, mediterranean country. Traveling from Spain's southernmost points through its northern cities, viewers will explore some of Europe's most important artists from Renaissance to Modernist – including Goya, Picasso, Dali, El Greco and Velasquez. As Sabry takes you off the beaten path, he will reveal rich insights into the culture and people who live with, work with, and have the pleasure of appreciating the greatest Spanish art and architecture every day.

1. The Moorish culture of 'Al-Andalus' (traversing nearly all of Iberia) was a staggering giant in both European and Mediterranean culture, especially under the breakaway caliphate of Cordoba, which would become a model of inter-cultural fertilization and religious tolerance for Christians and Jews. Discover the staggering art made in this period, from the marvels of the Alhambra to the Magnificent mosque of Granada.

2. Sabry and viewers will journey to the country’s scorched centre to explore Spanish art of the 16th and 17th centuries. From the mystical world of El Greco to the tender genius of Velazquez, this was a moment so extraordinary it became known as the Golden Age.

3. Sabry will reveal how the north of the country has produced some of the most dazzling and iconic art of the modern age. Spain's turbulent history has shaped artists from Francisco Goya to Pablo Picasso.

Sabry Amroussi is an art historian and writer living and working in Amsterdam. He specializes in the art of the Dutch Golden Age, mainly in the works of Rembrandt and his school, and has a keen interest in the Jewish history of Amsterdam. As a true omnivore when it comes to art, culture, and even cuisine, he has worked with and for major museums and collectors, such as the LACMA, Rijksmuseum, van Gogh Museum and the P de Boer collection in Amsterdam. As a guide for Context, he is eager to share this knowledge in real life, always with a big scoop of humor, ofter intermingling art with social life, cuisine, and history.
