No country in the world has a larger forested land area than Russia. The country's lumber industry has supported the economy for centuries and plays a pivotal role in the structure of countless Russian architectural monuments, which were often crafted by self-taught experts.

Fitted with ornate interlocking pieces, rather than any modern hardware, the traditional wooden architectural style has stood the test of time. Dating back to the Byzantine Empire, many monumental UNESCO World Heritage sites have become popular destinations for curious travelers and scholars.

During this conversation, we will virtually venture to several remote parts of Russia–to contextualize the spiritual, architectural, and cultural significance of these monumental structures. We'll begin from the church complex on the Kizhi island, situated in Lake Onega in the Russian Republic of Karelia. From there, we will set off to learn more about the architects who designed these landmarks and the legacy they've left behind.
Led by an expert on Russian culture and history, Nina Wieda, this Conversation will introduce learners to the fascinating construction methodology pioneered by Russian architects through the ages.  To learn more about the history and culture of Russia with Dr. Wieda, please click here.
