While most visitors to Russia focus on Moscow and St. Petersburg, some of Russia’s most unique historical treasures are found outside of the two capitals. The "Golden Ring" of Russia consists of eight cities located along an easily drivable route that starts only 1.5 hours from Moscow. Each city is a window into the region’s distant past, preserved in time away from the high energy of Russia’s capital.

The former capital of the powerful Novgorod Republic, Novgorod, and Vladimir are almost 300 years older than Moscow. Each used to be the capital of an independent state (the Novgorod Republic and the Vladimir Princedom) and one of the largest cities in Europe. Other Golden Ring cities - Rostov, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Sergiev Posad, and Pereslavl-Zalessky - host ancient monasteries, fortifications, ceremonial gates, and other historical treasures that transport visitors into the time before Eastern Slavs united around Moscow. Numerous museums celebrate the area’s traditional crafts, such as painted wooden spoons and lacquered boxes, and folk art motifs, such as the Museum of Fairytales.

Led by an expert on Russia, Nina Wieda, this Conversation will introduce you to the treasures of ancient cities that constitute the magical world of Russia’s Golden Ring. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a richer understanding of Russia’s history and cultural treasures.

This was a fascinating look at other places to visit in Russia. I had no idea the Golden Ring existed as a potential tourist destination. Dr. Wieda offered a great presentation with visuals, historical context and practical tips.
