The question about what may happen in Russia “after Putin” has been raised since at least 2004 (the end of the first presidential term), and each time the correct answer has been that Putin will stay. The 2020 constitutional amendments created the legal conditions for Putin to retain his post for another 12 years, and the political situation still does not favor a different forecast.

It seems that none of the possible candidates to replace Putin will have a decisive advantage over other candidates. The appearance of one popular politician under the conditions of a functioning personalistic regime would be extremely difficult, since he would become a threat to the current leader. The other option is the seizure of power by enforcement agencies, that is, military or other paramilitary organizations. We could see such an attempt in June 2023. Participate governance and even the democratization of Russia doesn’t look absolutely impossible, but it might take time.

Led by a historian, Vadim Malinovsky, this conversation will help to find potential political actors in Putin’s elite and to look into the future of Russia. Designed to inform curiosity, participants will come away with an increased understanding of what may happen after the long presidency of Putin.

Vadim is a historian (MA) who has graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. His focus is contemporary Russian history. He is working on a PhD dissertation on Stalin's national policy.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

Excellent talk, insightful and provocative

I really enjoyed this talk on what may happen with Russia's leadership in the coming years. A bit horrifying, but clear-eyed and serious. Highly recommended.

Russia after Putin

Vadim's overview of the seminar - Russia after Putin was a very depressing picture of what we might expect. I find Vadim a knowledgeable Russian expat who does not give us a rosy picure of our world.post Putin
