"The Flavians, admittedly an obscure family, at last, brought stable government to the Empire". That's how Suetonius starts his chapter on Flavius Vespasianus, the first of the Flavian dynasty. After the suicide of Nero - and with him the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty - the Roman Empire was at a turning point. Vespasianus the general, was able to achieve power ending the civil war of the year 69 AD, the "long year" as referred to by Tacitus. 
Vespasianus and his two sons, Titus and Domitianus, ruled for almost 30 years and undertook a strong and majestic building project for the city of Rome. A new dynasty needs to establish power and indeed, architecture is a great key. Most of the monuments erected during the Flavian dynasty period stand out still today in the city, one above all: the "new amphitheater" inaugurated during the rule of Titus, just a few months after the catastrophic event that buried Pompeii. This is the Colosseum that we all know today.
We will discuss the history of the three Emperors through their architectural projects, meant to leave a strong trace of the "new period" being inspired by the golden era of Augustus. Monumental squares, great baths complexes, spectacle buildings, triumphal arches would have remembered to everyone the new dynasty that had risen after the political crisis. The Flavians would have led Rome into the second century AD, preparing the way to the peak of the Empire that was about to come with Trajan and Hadrian.
Led by Dimosthenis Kosmopoulos, a classical archaeologist, this interactive seminar will focus on one of the most important periods of the first Roman Empire and on a crucial building phase of imperial Rome. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the dynasty that left permanent traces in the city.
This conversation is the second in a five-part series. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.

If you're interested in learning about ancient Rome, you need to take a course with Dr. Kosmopoulos. He is the one of the
most knowledgeable and most personable instructors I have ever known. I attended Volume 1 of the program, and I've signed-up for Volume 3. I intend to take other courses from Dr. Kosmopoulos as well.

If you watched HBO’s Rome series or taken Dimo’s seminar on the Augustus and the Julio-Claudians, this conversation is a great addition to your knowledge. Dimo is enthusiastic, experienced researcher at a number of these sites. He brings forward a great view of the Roman Forum and Arch of Titus, both memorable landmarks if you visit Rome, as well as others. Excellent!
