Tucked away in the sleepy town of Ravenna are some of the greatest mosaic masterpieces of the late ancient world. This conversation will explore these treasures.

Hidden away in Ravenna's modest churches are stunning mosaics that open a window into a late ancient world that has long since passed away. Formerly the headquarters for the western Roman fleet, Ravenna became the capital of Byzantine Italy in the sixth and seventh centuries. Throughout those years, emperors, empresses, and warlords beautified the city with remarkable works of art. Although most Byzantine art was demolished during the Iconoclastic Controversy of the eighth century, Ravenna preserved its treasures for subsequent ages.

In this seminar, Thomas F. Madden, Professor of Medieval History and author of numerous books on Italian history, will guide participants through the magnificent mosaics of San Vitale, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Galla Placidia Mausoleum, and Sant'Apollinare in Classe. Participants will not only experience the beauty of Late Antiquity still preserved in Ravenna but also learn of the people and times that produced these marvels.

Thomas F Madden is Professor of History and Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Saint Louis University. As an author and historical consultant, he has appeared in such venues as The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNN, and The History Channel. He is a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Medieval Academy of America, and he is a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Terrific seminar

This was a fascinating and, at times, jaw-dropping seminar. Dr. Madden did the impossible in not only introducing the Ravenna Mosaics in a 75 minute presentation but going into depth regarding the meaning of the mosaics he showed us. The visual images he used for his presentations were excellent. It was a pleasure to have someone as knowledgeable and eloquent as Dr, Madden present this material.
