On September 8, 2022, the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II came to an end. Just a few short months prior, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth had celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Seventy years ago, the British media heralded the arrival of “a new Elizabethan age,” and now that she has died, so too may the final link between Britain and its imperial past.
Our conversation will highlight the personal and political history of Elizabeth’s reign, how she navigated the post-World War II world, and the relationship between the monarchy to modern media, from television to the internet. We will also discuss the Queen’s often troubled relationship with the tabloids, Royal triumphs and scandals, and what the future may hold for the next generation of monarchs as King Charles III now awaits his own public coronation ceremony.
Led by Dr. Julie Taddeo, this Conversation will provide a framework for understanding the impressive legacy of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed to inspire curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of how her lifetime of dedication to service has impacted the nation and the world.
Dr. Julie Taddeo is Research Professor of History at University of Maryland. Her area of expertise is Modern British social and cultural history. She has published several books on such topics as the Bloomsbury Group, Steampunk, British period drama television, and reality TV.

Dr. Taddeo related a sensitive, in-depth, interesting portrayal of the long life and service of Queen Elizabeth II in this timely seminar. It was astounding to learn of her ascent to the throne at a young age and adaptation to her duties when the situation demanded her leadership. I was already in awe of her life accomplishments and weathering of the trials of the crown but this added to my respect for her service to her country. Delivered with enthusiasm by the speaker who clearly held broad knowledge about the monarchy, politics, history. I concluded my viewing with the thought that she left behind big shoes to fill! I learned more about the background information of her reign. Dr Taddeo entertained questions and responded with her lively thoughts and facts which ended the seminar on a great note. Loved it!
Very interesting presentation with broad scope of topics
I enjoyed the presentation but was a little disappointed. Much of it was information that I already knew and/or had seen recently in other media accounts about her life. Rather than a biography, I thought I would hear more of a curated point-of view, with a focus on how the monarchy changed during the time of Elizabeth's reign.
