Event Description:
A national leader or an illegal president, sovereign democracy or dictatorship, a strong man or a coward, a superpower or a dying empire? Let’s look at the last twenty years of Russian history with a historian from Moscow as we try to understand the current situation and to guess the future development path of Russia.
In August 1999 Vladimir Putin became Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. At this point in time, the country was recovering from the economic crisis of 1998 and its future was not looking great. We’ll discuss how Mr. Putin had made a great career for himself, from once a vice mayor of the second-largest city of the country to a Prime Minister who was not very well known by an average citizen. In 2000 he became President and one of the most controversial periods of Russian history began.
Together we will look at the biography of the current president of Russia trying to find the turning points of his life and the origins of his remarkable style in decision making. We will try to find the reasons for his great popularity in the country and of his achievements and victories that are difficult to deny. We will talk about the main opposition leaders, their views, and their programs. We will highlight the historical periods of Putin’s presidency and look at his rule from a historical perspective, as we attempt to put our emotions aside.
Led by historian Vadim Malinovsky this seminar will give a deep dive into the twenty-first-century history of Russia. Participants will come away with an increased understanding of the current political situation in the country.

Vadim is a historian (MA) who has graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. His focus is contemporary Russian history. He is working on a PhD dissertation on Stalin's national policy.

These can't be easy days for Vadim but he continues to deliver excellent lectures on political leaders in his home country. Fortunately for his Context audiences, Vadim did not leave his scholarship and personality behind when he was forced to leave St. Petersburg.

PUTIN

Current Russian history is as confusing as that of the past - but I am impressed with Vadim Malinovsky's try at interpreting it!. I find Putin an enigmatic man - and a real mystery!!

Parsing Putin

With his usual energy and thorough approach, Vadim encapsulated many of the life experiences which have led to the Putin we see today - a man with fearsome power and control in Russia.
