The death of Diana, Princess of Wales shook the British in a way no other contemporary royal event has done. The “People’s Princess” was the first genuine royal celebrity. On the 23rd Anniversary of her death, this conversation will take a factual retrospective of Diana’s life, the analysis will be that of a historian rather than a gossip columnist. We will examine the different backgrounds of Prince Charles and Diana and ask why marriage was even contemplated.

Diana's family, the Spencers, had been close to the British Royal Family for centuries, it seemed such an obvious match and Charles's family were relieved to see him married and on the way to creating an heir and a spare to ensure the continuation of the Windsor Dynasty. Her divorce from Prince Charles, and her violent death, rocked the Royal House of Windsor. Feverish and prurient speculation shadowed a marriage that had simply and irretrievably broken down for very complex reasons the most important, arguably, being that they were just so terribly unsuited as human beings.

Together, we will review the enormous contribution to the British Monarchy and the mutinous almost hysterical mood of the British people at the time of Diana’s death, all because of a misunderstanding over a flag. Led by one of London's renowned Blue Badge Guides and an expert on the history and contemporary lives of the British Royal Family, participants will come away with a deeper historical understanding of Diana, her tragically short life, and the important legacy she left behind.

Since leaving university in 1982, Sean has lived and worked across the globe in a nearly 30-year career as a senior executive in financial services. He put his skills and knowledge to work in the Charity Sector in the UK for 7 years but decided life was too short to not focus entirely on his passions for people, history, art and architecture. When not guiding, Sean is restoring a Georgian House and serving as a Parish Councillor. He is a freeman of the City of London and a freeman of the City Livery company of Clockmakers. He lives in London and Wiltshire.

All of the Context courses I have attended have been excellent, but this was one of the best. Sean had done his research and was able to point out the fact and the fiction in what we have previously heard about Diana. Loved his insights and video clips of various members of the royal family. Excellent job.
