Led by an expert on art, architecture, and postwar cinema, Dr. Jennie Hirsh, this Conversation will consider the ways in which different cinematic genres have addressed this fraught period in history as well as the ways in which film can offer strategies for both remembering and forgetting. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the range of works, from the documentary, essay, and feature films to more avant-garde and artistic contributions that push the boundaries of cinema, and representation, in interesting ways.
Jennie Hirsh (Ph.D., Bryn Mawr College) is a Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at Princeton and Columbia Universities, as well as pre-doctoral fellowships from the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, the U.S. Fulbright Commission, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Wolfsonian FIU. Hirsh has authored essays on artists including Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Yinka Shonibare, and Regina Silveira, and is co-editor, with Isabelle Wallace, of Contemporary Art and Classical Myth (Ashgate 2011).

Although I would have loved to see more than one film clip, I must acknowledge that I now have a long list of film to explore on my own. I had seen some of the films discussed, but many are totally new to me and seem well worth my time. Now I just have to find some.
Dr. Jennie Hirsh is an informed, well-prepared and engaging speaker. I would be happy to take another course with her.
