This course delves into the innovative and transformative works of Post-Impressionists. Emerging in the late 19th century as a response to Impressionism, Post-Impressionism marked a pivotal moment in art history where artists embarked on a quest to push the boundaries of traditional artistic practices.

Throughout this course, we will explore distinct artistic visions and revolutionary techniques of artists such as Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Suzanne Valadon, among others, analyzing the convergence of emotion, symbolism, color, and form that defined the movement. Each artist's unique approach to capturing the world around them will be examined in detail, providing insight into the motivations and philosophies that shaped their creations. Through in-depth discussions and visual analysis, this course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of Post-Impressionism and its key figures. Eager to learn more? Detailed descriptions of each lecture are provided below.
Part 1: Introduction to Post-Impressionism and Paul Cézanne: The Father of Modern Art
In this first lecture, we will discuss the historical and artistic context that led to the emergence of Post-Impressionism, differentiating between Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in terms of style and intent. We will also analyze Cézanne's most important series of portraits, still-lifes, and landscapes depicting Mont Saint-Victoire, evaluating their importance and influence in art history.

Part 2: Paul Gauguin: Primitivism and Symbolism
In the second lecture, we will examine Gauguin's search for Paradise Lost and the spiritual in his art, which took him to Pont-Aven in Brittany, to Panama and Martinique, and finally to Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands. Together we will explore his artistic experiments that influenced many avant-garde developments in the early twentieth century, his contribution to synthetism and symbolism, and the way he paved the way for primitivism in Western art.

Part 3: Vincent van Gogh: The Emotional Power of Color
In the third lecture, we will explore Van Gogh’s expressive use of color to convey emotions. His life and work were characterized by a profound exploration of human emotion, expressed through vibrant color, dynamic brushwork, and a deeply personal perspective. Together we will examine his groundbreaking artistic experiments which posthumously transformed him into one of the most famous artists of all time.

Part 4: Suzanne Valadon: Redefining Gender and Representation
The last lecture of the course will analyze the unique perspective of Suzanne Valadon, who started her career as a model for famous artists such as Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and eventually became a prominent artist on her own. In this seminar, we will analyze her portraits and nudes that challenge traditional gender roles and artistic norms, while discussing her role in reshaping the perception of women in art.
