While Pirates of the Caribbean gets all the fame, with yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! singing through our minds and visions of Tortuga and treasure, the Black Sea has a long, complex, and, above all else, underrated history of piracy. First ever recorded by the Ancient Greeks telling tales of the "inhospitable" Black Sea and its "dangerous tribes," the Black Sea would become the arena in which the Slavic, Ottoman, and Circassian pirates would make their livings violently interfering with sea trade routes.

Due to its entanglement in trade and piracy, the Black Sea was also the center of European slave trade, where Circassian and Slavic captives were transported to Ottoman slave markets; women were meant for harems and men were meant for the army. This slave market would last until 1838.

Join Context for an adventurous and and informative journey through history's lesser-known, but equally-exciting, pirates. Learn not only about their violent and ungovernable practices, but about their role in politics, trade, and history as a whole. Led by an expert on Eastern European history, Nina Wieda, this Conversation will introduce its participants to a fascinating chapter in the history and inspire questions for future learning. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with a newly-developed fascination in the Black Sea and its turbulent past.

I had to watch the recording before giving this interview. As usual Nina wieda was wonderful and I learned alot about the circassians, the Ottomans empire and the Cossacks.

Great presentation!

Nieda once again gives an amazing presentation! I know little about the area but she really made me curious for more. She is so knowledgeable about the region, the people and events. Organization and ability to pique my interest will keep me coming back. I am looking forward to the Amazon presentation.

Fascinating Insight on an Unusual Area of History

This was an absolutely terrific lecture. Dr. Wieda used the through line of Piracy on the Black Sea to give a lecture that incorporated social history, military tactics, and religion while giving a general overview of the history of the Black Sea region. Her presentation was engaging and fascinating, and I came away with a pile of cool history facts! If you like learning about "unusual" history (meaning non-Western Europe focused and with only a little political history thrown in), or even just history in general, this lecture is a fantastic choice.
