Piero della Francesca is acknowledged today as one of the foundational artists of the Renaissance and more than any other Italian fifteenth-century painter, Piero was responsible for the development of Renaissance painting throughout Italy.

Piero della Francesca is considered one of the most influential artists of the fifteenth century. His compositions marry art and science with cool precision and a sophisticated grasp of perspective - he was, after all, a mathematician. Piero might be defined as a “wandering painter” in the sense that he traveled continuously from the humble Tiber river valley where he was born to the great Italian courts of the fifteenth century.

Although one of the most beloved and intriguing artists today, surprisingly, he was only rediscovered in the mid-nineteenth century after generations of relative obscurity. Following his death in 1492, his artistic achievements faded from memory, only to be newly appreciated and celebrated today.

Led by art historian Elaine Ruffolo this interactive seminar will trace the life and times of Piero della Francesca. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of the artist and the places where he left his indelible artistic mark.

Elaine Ruffolo has been teaching art history in Florence for over 25 years and is a popular instructor for both students and adults. Her special interests include the economy and patronage of 15th century Italy and how it relates to art. Elaine firmly believes that the best way to understand a work of art is by exploring the context in which it was made. She holds an MA in art history.

Elaine Ruffalo did an excellent job of explaining Piero della Francesca's life and work, but also in sharing helpful recommendations on how to examine all art. She must be a wonderful professor and I look forward to discovering more art with her in the future.
