The opening of the Moynihan Train Hall in December 2020 has changed the face of New York’s Penn Station. Join historian E.Y. Zipris to explore the history of this important landmark and how it has transformed since its opening in 1910.

Pennsylvania Station is perhaps better known for its demolition than for either its original or its current existing structure. This seminar will place us squarely in midtown Manhattan beginning with its early twentieth-century presence up to its contested demolition and rebuilding in the 1960s to the present day, with its newly reopened spaces. Along the way, we will consider the external and dominant trends that affected Penn Station's tumultuous history ranging from social to architectural. Like so many of New York's well-known spaces, together, we will cover the big stories as well as the lesser-known details that add to this icon's infamous past and present.

Led by an expert on New York City history, E.Y. Zipris, this interactive seminar will explore the evolution of Penn Station. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the social and architectural context of this iconic station.

For over two decades, E.Y. Zipris has studied, worked in, lectured, and written about museums and history.
