Mention the word “ex-pat” in France, and most people cannot think of anyone but Americans like Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Josephine Baker, James Baldwin … But the story of ex-pats in Paris is also the story of immigrants, and it goes far beyond the A-List celebrities of history.

In this seminar, we will learn about lesser-known ex-pats – and why there is a distinction between the term "immigrants"–of both past and contemporary artists whose contribution to history has been forgotten alongside their names.

From the improbably true story of Eugene Bullard, a young American who fled the violence of the Jim Crow South to fight in two world wars and become a Parisian icon in the Roaring Twenties, to the story of the American painter Beauford Delaney and his significant influence on James Baldwin, this seminar will be a brief but in-depth survey of numerous ex-pats and immigrants (what is the difference anyway?) who made their own indelible mark on the City of Lights.

Led by an expert on history and literature, Professor Samuél Lopez-Barrantes, this interactive seminar will discuss the lives and impact of lesser-known artists who made their homes in Paris. Designed to inform curiosity and educate, participants will come away with a deeper appreciation for lesser-known ex-pats and immigrants and a better understanding of why Paris remains a go-to destination for so many artists today.

Broader view of Famous Period and People

This was a fascinating course, offering insights into people famous and less-famous that populated Paris of the 20s and 30s. It was nice to get more perspective on lives beyond the well-traveled tales of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, etc.
