The story of Christ and his followers has inspired some of the most beautiful and moving paintings ever produced in western art. Taken from the four Gospels and associated legends, the stories of Christ and his saints have been re-told in paint throughout the centuries and were central to religious devotion.
This talk will use the collection at London's National Gallery, to trace the development of European Art through the sacred image. Beginning with a 14th-century gold ground painting we will discuss the Byzantine influence on early Italian Art and examine the huge developments of the Renaissance through works by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, comparing them to less familiar works from Northern Europe and finishing with examples of the Baroque with works by Caravaggio and Velazquez. We will also talk about images of the life of Christ and the portrayal of angels and the saints, discussing the iconography associated with both.
Led by an expert on Art History, Hattie Bennett, this interactive seminar will trace the development of European painting through the Sacred Image. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the portrayal of Christian imagery.
This conversation is the first in a two-part series. Each seminar can be joined independently and in any order.
