Join a local Parisian expert, live from the streets of the Montmartre district, as they allow participants to see firsthand the sites and sounds through this virtual tour. From the contemporary art and culture scene to the storied inclined streets, we will explore the rise of Impressionism and the “French Touch” in the footsteps of some of the world’s most known and unknown artists. The video-camera-led virtual tour will weave and wind its way through the vibrant and offbeat quarter creating opportunities for reflection, dialogue, and an immersive visual experience.
An adventure in this always transitioning, once working-class suburb is a journey into the art world of the past, where Classicism espoused rules that visual artists had to follow. Our virtual walk will pass through the trendy South of Pigalle neighborhood to the most picturesque district in Paris where the rules were broken early and often. From the “Giants” of Impressionism and the creative people who were attracted to Montmartre in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, the realities that shook up art, architecture, music, and culture, in general, give a sense to how cultural hubs come to life.
Led by expert fiction writer, Gil Soltz, this live virtual tour will fill participants with the emotive charm that comes from one of the most beautiful parts of Paris. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of how “dissident” art in the late nineteenth and twentieth-century evolved from a bucolic village and its world-famous locals.
This virtual tour is part of a series by Gil Soltz. Each virtual tour can be joined independently and in any order.

A native of San Diego, Gil graduated in Politics and English from Brandeis University and later earned two Master's degrees: the first in Public Administration from New York University, and the second a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. After earning his MFA and producing his first book, Gil moved to Paris for a Parisienne and hasn't looked back. For over a decade Gil has lived, written, worked, and led tours in Paris. His background in literature - both canonized and contemporary - combined with his understanding of the inner workings of cities have enabled Gil to tell his narratives as experiences and provide unique insights into Parisian life.

You won't want to miss this one!

The tour of Montmartre with Gil Stoltz was so enjoyable. I found it so useful to have the maps to orient us to the area being discussed. I enjoyed the historical context he provided about the early contstrucion of Paris and the historical significance of the areas he walked through. It was great that he showed the street signs along the way. He is so knowledgeable and is able to package a wealth of information in such a short time, yet it did not feel rushed. It was informative and so well organized. I highly recommend this tour with Gil.

Informative and Engaging

Gil has somehow mastered the art of walking, filming, talking and fielding questions at the same time. His knowledge of French history and culture is extensive and delivered in an engaging and informative manner. Gil's tours are a delightful way to virtually explore Paris.
