The first Africans had been brought to Virginia as slaves in 1619 but it wasn’t until the 1670s that slavery began to dominate parts of the American economy. That process continued apace in the 18th century transforming every aspect of most southern colonies, from Virginia to South Carolina and Georgia. How did American law transform to codify and entrench race slavery in America in this period? How did plantation owners enforce submission and compliance and impose their will on a black, enslaved underclass? How did they work to try to prevent widespread resistance and what ways did enslaved men and women find to fight back to preserve their dignity and culture, or perhaps even to escape or revolt?

Dr. Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and has won more than a dozen teaching awards, including the University System of Maryland Board of Regents Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has held major research fellowships at Yale, Cambridge, the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship and the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar Award. Professor Bell is author of the new book "Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home," which was shortlisted for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize.

As always, great presentation. Like the way Dr. Bell involves the audience in the presentation. You can tell his lectures are very good because of the number of learned people who tune in every week for his lectures.

American History Mondays are great, so informative and fun, and at the same time deeply thought provoking and especially relevant to the times we are going through right now. Dr. Bell is a class act and so skillful in his delivery and presentation of the different subject each week. If I were back in my college days I bet he would be my favorite professor.
