The Renaissance in art history is associated with works by great masters like Leonardo Da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, Michelangelo Buonarroti, and the Sangallo brothers, Giuliano and Antonio. We are familiar with their artistic masterpieces, but we know less about their innovative work on fortress design and military architecture during the same historical period. This seminar will look at how revolutionary advancements during the European Renaissance influenced engineers and architects worldwide for centuries to come.

Modern military architecture evolved in part due to technological innovations in the art of warfare, such as the invention of gunpowder. Still, the artistic culture of the Renaissance had an equally significant impact on fortress design and construction. Brunelleschi’s invention of geometric perspective and profound understanding of algebra and geometry lead to new possibilities in architectural form. The brutal rules of war were analyzed, adapted, and finally bent by the skills of these masters. The result was an architecture never seen before, one guided only by the laws of geometry and practical necessity, not design trends. In some way, this new architecture could be considered the very first example of rational architecture.

Drawings, design projects, and constructions designed and inspired by the ideas of these masters will be the protagonists of this Conversation. We will discuss the role and reciprocal influence of Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, Michelangelo, and the Sangallos with practical examples. We will put beautiful castles and mighty fortresses into the political and cultural context of the European Renaissance.

Led by an expert on the history of military architecture, Giacomo Zavatteri, this interactive seminar will discuss the invention of modern military architecture. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased knowledge of an almost unknown chapter of art history.

Giacomo has a degree in Preservation of Cultural Heritage with a specialization in Medieval Art.
