I’ve attended many of these context webinars and this is one of the best. Alertte is very well spoken and explained how the dollhouses were not play things for children but collectible rich hobbies for wealthy women of that age and era. Also liked her explanation of many objects in dollhouse were real life objects - press for clothes, window washer, etc. Also appreciated her suggestions on books and movies and we even were emailed additional reading material! Great presentation!
Dollhouses—A wonderful toy
I enjoyed the program. It went a little slowly and sometimes I couldn't understand Alette's accent.
The lecture covers two of the main dollhouses of the 17th century in the Rijksmuseum collection including a brief history/bio of the two women who created these dollhouses and their interiors, enlarged photos of the interiors, and a description of the nature and purpose of select household items of historical significance and interest. I just wish there had been more photos and a virtual tour!
Alette shared marvelous details of the 17th century dollhouses and gave viewers a strong understanding of their construction and decoration. Learning about the dollhouses was also a great way to learn about the domestic lives of women.
