If you have been watching the opening of recent Olympic ceremonies - 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, or 2020 in Tokyo - you'll have seen the 11 Israeli athletes and 1 German policeman murdered at the Munich Games in 1972 be honored. The Palestinian militant organization Black September, demanding the release of over 200 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, and the freedom of the West German terrorists Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, killed two members of the Israeli Olympic team, and would later murder nine more hostages as police closed in upon them. It was a tense standoff, covered by media and watched by the eyes of the world, and continues to live in infamy today. In this Conversation, we'll discuss the tragedy of September 5th and 6th 1972 in Munich, hour by hour.

Led by an expert on modern German history, Dr. Finn Ballard, this Conversation will tell the story upon which Steven Spielberg's 2005 movie 'Munich' was based. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of this dreadful chapter in modern history.

Finn grew up in Northern Ireland before moving to England to study and later teach in the department of Film and Literature at the University of Warwick. He completed his doctoral study on German folklore and popular cinema in 2012, and has published extensively in the fields of Film Studies and Gender Studies. Since 2008, he has been living and guiding in Berlin. He now works as a historical advisor for television and film productions set in Berlin, particularly during the Weimar era or Third Reich. He is a journalist for the 'Siegessauele', Europe's foremost Queer magazine, and organises events at Berlin's English-language bookstore 'Another Country'.

In-depth, stimulating presentation

I really enjoyed this lecture which Dr Ballard researched and presented with great care. It was informative and I was intrigued. Dr Ballard’s policy of answering questions as he goes along is helpful and suits me very much!

As always Finn’s courses are well researched and presented thoughtfully. I won’t hesitate to take several more of his lectures. Also when I am
in Berlin in early December I hope to meet Finn in person and take a tour with him.
