Join Hilary Bockham to meet Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, and uncover the woman behind the pen. We’ll learn how she fits into the history of seventeenth-century English literature and we will understand her fascinating and dramatic personal life story.

Mary Shelley was named after her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, the pioneering English feminist who died just days after her daughter’s birth. Her father was William Godwin, a political philosopher and the first modern proponent of anarchism. At sixteen, she had already shown her unique literary skills. When she eloped with Percy Bysshe Shelley that same year (on a rowing boat to France), she was ostracized by her family and community. Her life was built on her fearlessness and strength from that moment on.

She began Frankenstein at age eighteen in response to a dare by Lord Byron, noted Romantic poet. It is often said that no work of literature has done more to shape the way humans imagine science and its moral consequences. Two hundred years later, fascination with her novel continues, and it has never been out of print.

When her adored husband Percy Shelley drowned, she was just 24 years old yet she had already suffered the death of four children, written Frankenstein and a clutch of other novels, traveled throughout Europe, mixed with the literary elite, and completed countless truly fascinating travel journals, letters, and diaries. She died of a brain tumor at 53 years old. When, again in Frankenstein, she had 'the monster' say “Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it:” she could have been speaking for herself.

Led by an expert on art history, Hilary Bockham, this interactive seminar will explore the life and work of Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of her relationship to the Romantic poets of the seventeenth century and her groundbreaking writings.

Fantastic!

I was recommended Hilary's webinars by a friend and I thought she was fantastic. I loved her presenting style and I really learned a lot. I also appreciated the way she included extra slides so that we could go back to the recording after and read them in more detail. A great experience, I would definitely recommend to others!
