Can't make this time? A video recording will be sent to all participants after the seminar.

Led by an emerging scholar of medieval literature, Margaret McCurry, this interactive seminar will explore the material creation and interpretation of illuminated manuscripts. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will learn the ways that illuminated manuscripts communicate rich visual and textual narratives of Europe’s collective cultural heritage.
With their intricate illustrations and brilliantly colored pigments, the illuminated manuscripts of the European Middle Ages were created by applying delicate, natural materials, such as the gold leaf, silverpoint, and mineral-derived paints onto vellum.
This seminar will introduce the iconic features of illuminated manuscripts and study the ways in which their figural and ornamental decoration contribute to the meaning and function of the medieval manuscript within specific theological, liturgical, devotional, institutional, and ideological contexts.
Together, we will discover that the stories behind illuminated manuscripts’ material creation are often just as fascinating as the stories found within them.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Lively Presenter

Margaret McCurry is a lively presenter who easily conveys her love of medieval manuscripts. Her presentation included slides of various categories of manuscripts.and they were a pleasure to look at. I hope Ms. McCurry will offer other seminars.

Very illuminating!

While I have always appreciated the art of illuminated manuscripts, I didn’t really know that much about how they were made, nor about the various types of books. MM did a good job of explaining things. The video she showed at the end was also very helpful.
