Led by an emerging scholar of medieval literature, Margaret McCurry, this interactive seminar will explore the material creation and interpretation of illuminated manuscripts. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will learn the ways that illuminated manuscripts communicate rich visual and textual narratives of Europe’s collective cultural heritage.

With their intricate illustrations and brilliantly colored pigments, the illuminated manuscripts of the European Middle Ages were created by applying delicate, natural materials, such as the gold leaf, silverpoint, and mineral-derived paints onto vellum.

This seminar will introduce the iconic features of illuminated manuscripts and study the ways in which their figural and ornamental decoration contribute to the meaning and function of the medieval manuscript within specific theological, liturgical, devotional, institutional, and ideological contexts.

Together, we will discover that the stories behind illuminated manuscripts’ material creation are often just as fascinating as the stories found within them.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.

Ms. McCurry’s presentation was terrific. She began with a clear description of the process of making an illuminated manuscript with good videos of the process, followed by a description of four different genres of the manuscripts, focusing on several of the most well-known illuminated manuscripts. She concluded with a demonstration of digitalization of manuscripts. She is very knowledgeable and I really enjoyed her presentation. I look forward to seeing other illuminated manuscripts with much more appreciation of what I am seeing. If you are interested in this topic, I recommend this course.

Disappointing

Presentation lacked the professional knowledge and depth expected of Context lectures. Breathless, “sorta, kinda of”, lack of familiarity with recognized terms.
