Introducing the art and monuments of the exquisite Renaissance city of Mantua. Art historian Susan Steer explores the treasures of this magnificent city.
This exquisite Renaissance city is north Italy’s best-kept secret. Often overlooked by international visitors, tiny Mantua or Mantova is packed with treasures – the city boasts a vast ducal palace and castle complex, with grand staterooms and intimate private apartments, decorated with renowned frescoes by Andrea Mantegna, Pisanello, and other Renaissance artists; elsewhere we find architecture by the likes of Alberti, and a suburban pleasure-palace designed and decorated with sensational frescoes by Giulio Romano as a love-nest for lusty Duke Federico Gonzaga II.
Led by an expert on Italian Medieval and Renaissance art, Dr. Susan Steer, this interactive seminar introduces the city of Mantua, concentrating on its greatest glories, the art and monuments of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when the city reached its zenith under the reign of the Gonzaga dukes. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will not only increase their knowledge of Renaissance Italy, they will be sure to want to add Mantua to their itinerary on their next trip to Italy.

This is the most interesting historical review that I have the opportunity to see. The thought that this city lies within other interesting Historical areas is absolutely fascinating. We will be in the area in September of this year and expect to visit Mantua.

Mantua: Magnificent city of Art with Dr. Susan Steer

One of the many things I appreciate about this seminar is that I have begun to see trends and characteristics in the works of the artists that I can trace back to previous seminars by Dr. Steer. I have been to many museums and cathedrals in Italy and have appreciated the art only aesthetically. It makes SUCH a difference to have background and history and information about the artists, their works, and the cities. I want to see these in person with a much broader perspective, thanks to Dr. Susan Steer. Thank you for this seminar.

Very informative and entertaining

This was the second time I took this seminar. The first time was very informative and enjoyable but now I am planning to visit Mantua and I wanted to pay more attention to details about visiting the city in person. Dr. Steer provides plenty of those details along with her description of the artistic highlights. I am now in a great position to plan my visit to Mantua.
