Join a local Peruvian expert, live from the mountains of the Andes. For those that hike the Inca trail, after 4 days (3 nights) of hiking, the sight of Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate is an emotional, once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is that same view that this virtual Conversation will start with – looking down the famous UNESCO World Heritage site in its majestic mountainous setting – not through slides but brought to you live, from an expert with a camera overlooking this magnificent vista. Spoiler alert: llamas may well be spotted in their natural habitat, although we cannot guarantee this.

The purpose of Machu Picchu continues to capture the imagination of many today, it is considered an authentic archaeological enigma. Why did the Incas choose this site, hidden away in this rugged, and difficult-to-reach location? Why did it take until 1911 to be re-discovered? How did the discovery happen? And why was it named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World? Together we will explore what we know, the mysteries that still exist, and the site in all its natural (and virtual) splendor.

Led by a professional guide with over 20 years of experience and a degree in both tourism and archaeology, Michael Lazo Gamarra, this live virtual tour will visit some of the most important areas of the citadel and its hidden Inca treasures. As we walk down in the footsteps of the Incas, we will visit for example the Temple of the Sun, Sacred Rock, Sundial, and the temple of the Condor to gain a deeper understanding of the ancient Inca civilization’s ingenuity, architecture, astronomy as well as culture, symbolism, and philosophy.

This virtual tour is part of a Peru series by Michael Lazo Gamarra. Each virtual tour can be joined independently and in any order.

Born and raised in Cuzco, Peru, Michael Lazo Gamarra has been working in tourism since 2003 and has been a professional hiker since 2007. As an officially licensed Tour Guide for Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, he has hiked the Inca Trail more than 500 times and leads private and group tours in Peru and across South America. He received his degrees in Tourism and Archaeology from the Universidad Andina del Cusco in 2001. Extremely passionate about his culture and his country’s history, he is fascinated by the Inca philosophy and enjoys traveling, hiking, and meeting people from different backgrounds. He loves questions, especially difficult ones, so come prepared.

Almost like being there, but drier

This is my first virtual tour of a site. Pachu Picchu is definitely on my bucket list, but I was a little afraid that it might be too strenuous for me. I am completely convinced that I can do it easily, and I will LOVE it. Thank you so much for the real-time experience.

Extreme Disappointment

This was an utter waste of time. The tour was disorganized, replete with technical glitches, and the information was beneath the level of a guidebook. This was my first context tour, and it will be my last.

A live walk through - awesome

Walking thru Machu Picchu with Mike live was a very rewarding experience. He said the fog would lift and it did.

Excellent presentation, but the live video format has its downsides.

Mike did a fine job sharing Machu Picchu with us, with live video. While the live nature of the program is exciting in some ways, it has weaknesses too, such as: (1) we visited on a cloudy and overcast day, and we never saw the mountains; (2) there were pretty constantly tourists in the way; (3) I think we saw quite little for the time involved. Maybe a standard prepared program, with some minutes "live" would be better".
