This seminar presents the life and work of the late Mexican architect Luis Barragán (1902-1988). Focused on his work in Mexico City, we will explore his home and studio complex (a UNESCO World Heritage site), his commercial hotels, his work in the Pedregal neighborhood, and more.

Together we will explore the career of Luis Barragán, and visit several of his most famous structures in Mexico City. Sites discussed will include: Casa Luis Barragán (his jewel-like home-studio complex and a UNESCO world heritage site), the Hotel Camino Real in Polanco, Casa Prieto Lopez in Los Jardines del Pedregal (an upscale modernist neighborhood that he co-developed with Diego Rivera in the 1940s), and Casa Gilardi, the last project completed before his death. Finally, we will talk about why this architectural genius has received less scholarly attention than deserved and the fate of his archives in Switzerland. An inspiration to postwar artists such as Dan Flavin and James Turrell, and the subject of an important body of work by contemporary photographer James Casebere, as well as the subject of a brilliant 2019 film by Jill Magid, Barragán remains arguably one of the most important mid-century modern architects in the world.

Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and architecture, Dr. Jennie Hirsh, this interactive seminar will provide a dynamic voyage to and through the colorful and enigmatic work of Barragán. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased understanding of the architectural aesthetic that is unique to Barragán's sculptural modern architecture.

    Inspirational!!!

Dr. Jennie Hirsh is a fabulous lecturer! I really enjoyed how she weaved Barragán's concepts, architecture history, art history, and contemporary art, to give us a 360 breadth of his influence and background. Her presentation also made us feel as if we were on actual tours of Barragán's famous sites. My wife and I are truly inspired by this lecture-- even our 10 year old daughter paid full attention and enjoyed Dr. Hirsh's lecture!!! Highly recommend this and can't wait to learn more from Jennie.

    Outstanding presentation!

What a fascinating presentation on architect Luis Barragan! The photos, detailed floorplans, and video clips that Jennie used throughout the presentation really made the various houses and buildings come alive. I am inspired to include Mexico City on my next trip to North America! I look forward to attending more architectural seminars with Jennie Hirsh.
