On the coast of North Sealand, near an old fishing hamlet and a medieval church, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is located in a beautiful old park with magnificent panoramic views of the Sound (Øresund) and Sweden. A synthesis of architecture, art, and landscape connects beautifully for an all-encompassing experience for the visitor. This seminar offers an introduction to this splendid museum, a must-see for any visitor to Denmark.

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art attracts guests from all over the world, all year round, and is a popular day-trip destination from Copenhagen. We’ll explore how the exhibition buildings lend themselves beautifully to the park, landscaped with a terrace, open lawns, shady woods, and a gorge down to the beach. We’ll be transported to these natural surroundings, including the magnificent sculpture collection with works created by Arp, Calder, Max Ernst, Heerup, Miro, Moore, Karavan, and several others.

We’ll learn about the origins of the museum’s name, its history, and its collection, which houses more than 4,000 works of all genres. The works on display often rotate around a permanent collection of Alberto Giacometti sculptures, Danish artist Asger Jorn’s paintings, and the hugely popular Gleaming Lights of the Soul installation created by Yayoi Kusama. Hopefully, participants will get the sense of how the museum exudes an informal and relaxed atmosphere in the lovely old park and exhibition buildings, offering something to all visitors.

Led by Danish historian and Context expert guide and art lover, Kathrine G. Bjerregaard, this conversation invites participants to visit the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation and knowledge of this leading international art museum founded by a visionary man, Knud W. Jensen.

Kathrine Bjerregaard holds a Masters degree in History and Philosophy. She began her career as an education officer at the Royal Collections before joining the academic staff at The National Museum of Denmark. For the past ten years, Kathrine has traveled throughout Scandinavia and Europe with Danish groups when not giving guided walks and visits to international visitors in Copenhagen or writing on her next book. Growing up in Luxembourg and Los Angeles with her Danish family and later in Copenhagen has given Kathrine a wide horizon and an American accent. Now living in Copenhagen with her family, she has a keen eye on the local scene and an acute understanding of Danish culture, mentality and history seen from the inside and outside. Kathrine can translate ‘hygge’ and tell tales from Danish history so you get it. Every tour is as individual as the group it is created for.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

90 minutes, including a 30 minute Q&A.
