This seminar looks at the work of Louis Kahn (1901-1974), whose career as an architect and educator left an indelible mark on the built environment.
This seminar examines the complicated life, work, and legacy of Philadelphia-based architect Louis Kahn. Surveying his building projects and other pursuits across his career, this conversation looks at examples of educational, residential, religious, and other cultural projects undertaken by Kahn before his sudden passing at Penn Station in New York City in 1974. We will look at a wide range of projects, such as the Trenton Bath House, Erdman Hall (at Bryn Mawr College), The Salk Institute for Biological Studies overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the library at Phillips Exeter Academy, the Kimball Art Museum, his work on the Yale University Art Gallery and British Art Center in New Haven, and a few of his smaller projects for private homes (such as the one he built for Margaret Esherick). Finally, we will consider his unrealized City Tower Project.
Led by an expert on modern and contemporary art and architecture, Dr. Jennie Hirsh, this interactive seminar will survey examples of residential, commercial, and cultural projects by Kahn. Designed to inform curiosity and future travels, participants will come away with an increased appreciation for Kahn's use of geometry and simple materials in his technically innovative and austere yet elegant designs
This conversation is part of a series on architects with Dr. Jennie Hirsh. Each session is designed as a stand-alone seminar as well as part of the series. For additional details, click here.

Louis Kahn

The lecture on the late Louis Kahn by Dr. Hirsh was marvelous. I am familiar with Kahn's work and have toured the Salk Institute but Hirsh fleshed out his oeuvre by showing us photos of a variety of his works and addressing his preferred design elements. Now I feel much better prepared to dig further into his work. Fascinating lecture.

Learned so much

Jennie Hirsch has such a wonderful style of communicating while delivering so much information. Sh in fact inspired me to go to New Haven to visit two of Kahn's buildings that I was not familiar with. I will also visit Kroon Hall at Yale University.

Very informative presentation on Louis Kahn

Wow! I came away from this seminar having learned so much on this architect! Dr. Hirsh really made his works come alive through excellent visuals and concise, clear explanations. While I was familiar with some of Louis Kahn's projects, I loved learning more details about his residential projects, and his life in general. I look forward to attending other seminars led by Jennie Hirsh and learning even more about modern architecture.
