In June 2023, people from all over the world will travel to the Baltic shores to participate in Latvia’s celebrated Song and Dance Festival - one of the largest festivals in the world. A visit to Latvia is a good opportunity to see its Baltic neighbor Lithuania, whose border is only 2 hours from Latvia’s capital Riga.

Lithuania used to be the largest country in Europe, and the last county ruled by a pagan fire-worshiping prince. Lithuania is full of historic monuments, including the 14th-century Trakai island castle. Led by an expert on the Baltics, Nina Wieda, this Conversation will introduce you to Lithuania’s fascinating history, unique culture, and tourist destinations. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will come away with an increased fascination with this Baltic country and a desire to visit it this summer.

Nina Wieda is a native of the Caucasus living in Chicago, USA. She holds a Ph.D. in Slavic from Northwestern University and an MA in Nationalism Studies from Central European University. Nina also has experience in journalism, advertising, and consumer research – her writing has been published in three languages. She wrote her Master's thesis about the Northern Caucasus region. Dr. Wieda currently teaches at Northwestern University near Chicago.

This conversation is suitable for all ages.

A Forgotten Middle Ages Power

Who knew that Lithuania was once the largest and one of the most influential powers in Europe in the Dark Ages? You learn all about that and more from the fascinating history of the country, now not so big, in the lecture by Dr. Wieda. And there's more about life in present day Lithuania which is worth a visit.

I have now done all the Baltic states with Nina Wieda! I will not get there in person but thanks to her I am familiar with their history and am so sorry to not be able to go !

Muriel Dimock (Lakeville, US)

The first 12 minutes repeated information from previous lectures. I would have preferred getting even more info on Lithuania.
