Event Description:
Explore the beginning of 20th century Russia through snapshots of the life of Leon Trotsky –– a key player in the Revolution. How did a Jewish boy from a small town become one of the most influential revolutionaries of the world? Together we’ll examine his Trotskyism, a variant of Marxism, and the role he played in the founding of the Red Army.
We will cross-examine his relationship with Vladimir Lenin, other revolutionaries, and their opponents. As a Commissar of Foreign Affairs in the new Soviet government, Trotsky helped defeat forces opposed to Lenin’s Bolshevik control. He was also one of the founders of Politburo, the central policy-making authority of the Soviet Union. In the 1920s as a result of the power struggle with Joseph Stalin, he was deported from the country and assassinated in Mexico in 1940.
Led by historian Vadim Malinovsky this seminar will give a deep dive into the history of the Russian Revolution and the role of one man, Leon Trotsky, in its history. Participants will come away with an increased understanding of him as a Marxist theorist as well as the reasons why he lost the power struggle in the 1920s.

Vadim is a historian (MA) who has graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University. His focus is contemporary Russian history. He is working on a PhD dissertation on Stalin's national policy.

Yet another terrific class with Vadim. While I knew Trotsky's life in a very general sense, Vadim fleshed him out in all his brilliance, commitment and ruthlessness.
