September 15, 2022 at 5pm ET
Soak up the splendor of Imperial Russia by looking at the breathtaking interiors of one of the most beautiful palaces in the country. We’ll learn about the world-famous Amber Room and virtually take a stroll in the lovely Catherine Park. We will learn about the lifestyle of the Russian Royal Family, while examining the most stunning Summer Palace of the Russian Empire.
We will start with the foundation of the Catherine Palace and with the origins of the name of the place itself: Tsarskoye Selo / Tsar’s Village, Pushkin. Then, we will explore the most iconic rooms, including the Amber Room. Amber Room will be the highlight of this conversation. We will learn about the most important details of this room and its history. We will discuss the many renovations and improvements made by emperors throughout history. We will also talk about what happened to the Palace after the Russian Revolution and how it suffered during WWII. The palace has more recently been restored in the last ten years, with some new interiors opening for the first time. We will view these together before virtually walking into the lovely Catherine Garden to look at other exquisite buildings of the complex.
As you watch the presentation, we encourage you to think about these questions:
  1. How do you think commoners of the Romanov era reacted to the construction of luxurious palaces while they themselves lived in impoverished conditions?
  2. Knowing that Catherine’s Palace was almost destroyed during WW2, does it diminish the value of this architectural highlight after the restoration?
  3. What do you think was the primary motivation of the Soviet government for restoring the Imperial palaces?
