Known as a glass designer, René Lalique began his career as a jewelry maker, eventually becoming one of the most important designers of the Art Nouveau Movement, designing jewelry for the Parisian demimonde. His love for nature and his rebellion against the established aesthetic of the late 19th century, made him look for different themes and materials compared to established jewelry shops like Cartier. A new look of modernity was emerging with different worldviews and Lalique would become part of this new aesthetic.
Similar to René Lalique, Calouste Gulbenkian had a passion for nature and art and the two kept a friendship for decades. While living in Paris, Gulbenkian acquired over 170 jewelry pieces from Lalique and some glass work as well. This collection is displayed in the Museum of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, established in Lisbon in 1956.
Led by art historian Estela Mendes, this interactive seminar will take us from the late nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century, when Art Nouveau emerges as a different aesthetic, where nature and women take center stage in this universe of senses and symbols. Designed to inform curiosity as well as future travels, participants will learn the intriguing story of a groundbreaking artist who captured the essence of an era.

Bringing the Past into A Vivid Present

It could have gone on forever in my book. It would have been wonderful to see even more about the Gulbieken Foundation. I was in Lisbon and didn't understand it's importance to art and science. Would love to go back for just the museum experience alone. ( And the food, and the views and and Estela as a guide).
